Conchiology - the collecting of sea shells - has an ancient
history. The truth, in antique times shells were more used
not as objects of a collecting but as subjects of ornament.
Roman historian Svetonius tells that one of the first collector
of sea shells was emperor Caligula . In Middle Ages the
Comb-shells were one of symbols of Christianity. Crusaders
selected them on coast of Palestine and carried on their
hats and helmets. The Cowrie-shells long time were used
as money on Pacific islands and some Asian countries.
